Having lived in Carnegie for the last 8 years, it is safe to say that I know the area by heart.
I’ve watched business come and go, restaurants rise and fall and the populace triple and soar.
I’m always tinged with slight apprehension when a new cafe or a bakery opens up as I’m never quite sure if they have what it takes.
So when the Boy and I noticed a new cosy cafe open up a couple of months ago, we thought we would do the neighbourhood friendly thing and drop by for a visit on their second weekend of operation.
Not expecting to be blown away as they were fairly new, I did however enjoy our first visit there.
I particularly loved the warm welcome and genuine vibe from the staff and not to mention the decor and cute menu stole my heart.
So it was only appropriate that we returned armed with camera and hungry bellies for our second visit.
Their menu as I said is very cute, with breakfast and lunch options named after animals.
Cakes, sauces, wraps and salads are also on offer with their own respective animal names.
In terms of coffee options, I was delighted to note that they catered for self-professed coffee snobs like myself *grin* who are part of the ever growing third wave coffee followers (check out my Coffee Hits Guide if you are interested: Part I and Part II).
Split Milk uses Supreme coffee beans and I decided to try their Chemex Coffee ($6.00) on offer. The Boy as usual went with his choice of English Breakfast Tea ($3.50).
On both our visits, I have ordered the Sheep ($10.00) (Baked free range eggs served in a pan with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach and feta with sourdough and chilli jam) which I absolutely adore due to the freshness and simplicity of the dish.
I especially like the sweet chilli jam which cuts through the feta and sun-dried tomatoes beautifully.
On both his visits as well, the Boy has ordered the Donkey ($10.50) (Poached eggs, bacon and spinach on sourdough with spiced capsicum aioli).
It seems that it is aptly named as the Donkey’s spiced capsicum aioli has a “kick” to it. HEE HAW!!!
I love that Carnegie has a new local cafe to go to, to just chill, relax and enjoy some good quality service in comfortable settings.
We’ll definitely be making it one of our local favourites 🙂

Oh, this place looks great. Bonus, it’s perfectly located about half way between our place and my brother in Hampton … I see a meet up being organised!
Sadly we don’t have much in the way of good cafes in our area, from what there is close to home I would have to go with Barclay’s in Heathmont – the food is good and the coffee is … consistent …
Oh Boo 🙁
UGH! I love Melbourne!!
I love Melbourne too!
We’ve tried this place too!! SO happy about it. Have only had coffee but no doubt will have a bite one day 🙂 I’m in your local area too, so can’t give you loads of recommendations. We don’t have that many, do we! However we did try big bear on glen huntly rd (near the station) last weekend & had a yummy Reuben!! They use baker di chirico bread. Coffee was nice. Ben’s been bugging me for a coffee machine, actually!! 😉
Heidi xo
I know right… Huff is pretty okay too 🙂
I love the homey feel of the cafe and the cute logo! I saw Lianne blogging about it not long ago… you guys must live not far away from each other! Hehe. 😛
I didn’t realise that!
I didn’t know we live so close! Love this place! Was so glad to find it! (: hehe I have to say that my fav local cafe is Proud Mary! Their potato hash is TO DIE FOR. hehe
We are neighbours! Jumps for joy!
Yeah! As a Glenhuntly local I adore Spilt Milk also, and have been there SO MANY times since it opened – normally for a coffee and a Squirrel (their chocolate brownie – have you tried?) My second fave is Batch in Balaclava – both these cafes just have fantastic service!
I want the giraffe!
I like their logo design of the milk cow. It is very clever. I wish I was clever like that. Nope:(
It’s super duper cute!
YAY! A place that isn’t too far away and has reasonable prices 😀
Correcto!
My favourite local cafe right now is Streat.
Chipotle spiced beans and coriander pork belly. Do I need to say more?
No? I will anyway. 🙂 The other reason Streat is fantastic is because they’re a social enterprise and provide homeless youth training for careers in the hospitality industry.
But mostly – chipotle spiced beans and pork belly. 😉
Man I want to head there too!
Circa is my favourite Cafe,
I wish I could eat there everyday.
In a tiny space where cars used to park,
baristas make coffee that hits the mark.
If you are early you might just be able,
to actually sit and eat at a table!
The food is so good people will wait for ages,
as they flick through comic book pages.
To top it all off its so close to home,
for coffee like this people travel to Rome.
Congratulations you winner you!
My favourite local cafe is Jam for Joe because they serve simple and delicious food with fresh ingredients 🙂 And I love the owners hehe ~
Ohhh I wish they had Split Milk last year and before when I was still studying at Caulfield 😀 but still i’m gonna come try it out!
Ooh Jam for Joe sounds cute!
I live in the same area as CheezyK and she is correct, there is not much out here cafe wise. I am trying The Firehouse on Saturday but it is more of a restaurant. Still haven’t made it to Barclays…
Oh really? Boo.. I want to go to Barclays too!
I love quirky-named cafes and dishes, so this place fits the bill for me obviously!
Despite an abundant number of eateries around where I live, I don’t have a favourite in this neck of the woods. Although I have been known to cross town for a good cup of coffee and a nice cupcake (or macaron!) My current favourite cafe is Lil Boy Blue Kitchen and Bar in Kew. I would blog about it but I haven’t yet cos I don’t want anyone else to find out about it and then we won’t get a table when we go on the weekends, hahahahaha 😉 *evil, evil, EVIL grin*
Blog about it before it closes down!!!
